Online Safety in a Digital World

Virtual Perception is a digital regional burning man event, and replacement for Blazing Swan that was recently cancelled due to Covid-19. At present, we believe this to be the first online Burn.

Virtual Perception aims to;

• Provide an online space for the Blazing Swan community to collaborate together to radically self-express themselves, gift, participate and connect with the community over the Easter period when Blazing Swan would typically occur.
• Be open and accessible to all in the community
  • Recognising that this may open Blazing Swan up to a wider, and not necessarily suitable or wanted, audience due to the lack of ‘control’ on the internet.
  • Recognising that, just Blazing Swan, not all events – due to their nature or subject matter, should have full public visability
  • And that we should all remain considerate, aware and respectful of our Consent principle.
• And that, just like the actual IRL Blazing Swan event, we may receive burner visitors from other parts of the world, as well as others who have never experienced burn culture.

Anyone. One of our 11 principles is Radical Inclusion, as such we invite anyone to take part in Virtual Perception.

No. Streaming is a great way to deliver your gift or art via a digital format. But it’s not the only way to connect with the event.

For many, you may miss the interpersonal connection with others – streaming is more of a ‘performance’ for others to watch and provide feedback via the chat functions.

But webcam chat platforms, such as Zoom, allow participants to step into our world and connect with other Blazers and Burners. And these be a better way to connect and talk with other members of the community.

As ever, everyone should consider their safety online when they step into these environments.

Always consider how you’re going to provide a safe enviroment for your stream.

Not everything in a Burning Swan world is deemed suitable for default world, and sometimes organisers want to make a more private event. Consider your online safety.

If you’re planing to use Twitch, you can set the acocunt to ‘mature content’.

1. Go to Twitch.tv and access Settings from your Account drop menu located in the top-right corner of the browser
2. In the Settings window, single-click the Channel and Videos option
3. Scroll down to the Content Settings and — provided you know you would prefer to work in the raw — switch the Mature Content option to the ON position.

Twitch’s Terms of Service dictate that, if your channel is broadcasting sexual activity, nudity, threats, or extreme violence (in-game activity included), and your Channel is not marked as “Mature” then Twitch can immediately and irrevocably terminate your account.
